A dental implant is a procedure used to replace a missing tooth.  This procedure consists of drilling the jaw -where there’s no tooth- to place a titanium screw which will stay fixed in the jawbone.  This screw will hold the artificial tooth or teeth.

Who qualifies for a dental implant?
Any person with a missing tooth or teeth is a good candidate.  First of all, the dental surgeon needs to conduct an oral health evaluation and your history.
In some cases, he/she will take some additional exams like photographs, x-rays, a scan or lab tests.
Then, a personalized treatment plan will be done together with you according to the quantity of implants you need and type of prosthesis.

In what cases does somebody need a dental implant?

A dental implant is needed in case you want to replace one tooth.  Also it is a solution as a partial or total fixed bridge solution to replace several teeth or to help keep your dentures in place.

How long does this procedure take?
In most of the cases a dental implant procedure takes 4 to 6 months to anchor and heal (this is called the osseointegration process), but in a few cases this procedure can be done in 2 to 3 days after placing the screw into the jawbone.  

Is this a painful procedure?
No, this procedure is painless because it is performed under local anesthetic.
The next days after the surgery some discomfort may be experienced, but you will receive a prescription for analgesics.  

Can my body reject the implants?
No. The dental implants are made of titanium, which is a biocompatible with the human body, so it is safe.

How long does a dental implant last?
This is a treatment that can last all your life but like any other natural tooth, needs good care and maintenance.
The patient who has a dental implant has to have good oral hygiene habits and visit a dentist periodically to evaluate and prevent any problem related to the jawbone and tissue around the implants.

How much does a dental implant procedure can cost?
That depends on the quantity of dental implants you need, type of prothesis and if you need any bone graft.
