I'm Scared of Going to The Panama Dental Center |
Doc Holliday and the OK corral conjures up an image of the local barber yanking teeth out between shaves. The Hollywood myth tells us there were no anesthetics, except perhaps for a bottle of red eye, and the procedure was performed in the same chair used for cutting hair. The town barber cigar in mouth, sleeves rolled up, and blood stains on his apron: I know the image as well as you do. How about Moe, Larry, and Curly playing three bumbling - pain dispensing dentists complete with mallet and chisel? America has always given dentists bad press. This negative spin has fostered an almost uncanny fear amongst people about the dentist. But these images can’t be the only reason so many of us dread the trip to the dentist, so lets examine a few others.
Before we begin though, you need to realize that a majority of the visits made to the Panama Dental Center are for pain relief, pain that in most cases could have been prevented with good oral hygiene, early detection, and bi-annual cleanings . And another interesting aspect is, that when people are told they need a certain dental procedure, they procrastinate, decline or even question the diagnosis of their dentist. The same people will just sheepishly accept anything their medical doctor tells them and readily submit to any suggested tests or procedures.
Going to the Panama Dental Center is something most people dread. They cancel their appointments at the last minute to avoid going. When they finally commit, usually because of the pain, they may toss and turn the night before. This sense of dread is very common although completely unwarranted. Today’s dental technology, although not pain free, uses techniques that minimizes the discomforts of the past. So lets review why people might still be afraid of visiting the dentist .
Pain: Regardless of whether your dentist gave you laughing gas as a kid, people still have the perception that dentists dispense pain. Perhaps it is the visual image of having a tooth pulled or drilled on, that causes this fear to grow to epic proportions. While certain dental procedures are not comfortable, such as getting a root canal or crown, they are usually not that painful. Modern technology and anesthesiology has greatly reduced the pain one feels while at the dentist. However, there can be pain when you get home, as you recover from a procedure such as having your wisdom teeth removed. So while there may be some minor pain it's usually over in a few hours or days.
Unfamiliar and Frightening Tools: Just looking at the tray in a dentist's office can be scary. There are sharp and long objects, and many things look like they could be tools of torture. You’ll feel much better, if you ask the Panama Dental Center staff to briefly discuss these tools and their function to increase your comfort level.
Bad News: When going for a checkup, there’s always the chance for a bad diagnose, usually because we’ve waited too long to get attention in the first place. As a child remember how happy you were, when the dentist told you that he found no cavities? . Well, the fear of a needed root canal or the discovery of gum disease often acts as a deterrent to even check up visits. Any recommended procedure may cause a bit of pain and that fear can be compounded, when its an expensive routine requiring numerous appointments.
The Drill, The Noise and The Smell: Hearing a drilling noise can be similar to listening to someone slowly scratch their fingernails against a chalkboard. It's unnerving. And it's even worse, when you know the drilling is in your head. People get very anxious about this noise, and that can cause them great fear. But you can easikly done earphones to reduce or eliminate these nosies if they truly bother you.
Sensitive Teeth: For those with sensitive teeth, even having air blown against them, can cause unease. Going to the dentist can be downright scary for such people, as they do not know how bad things will get. Just let us know at the Panama Dental Center of your sensativity and take special steps for your comfort.
One of the worst things about dental work is that we tend to think all kinds of terrible and anxiety-inducing thoughts. Going to the dentist may not be your favorite thing.
